Spotlight on: Reishi Mushroom + CASHEW MAYO

This little gem has made about enough headway this year since kale in 2013. I mean, in all honesty, this mushroom might develop an ego soon if we dont watch out because it is taking popularity to a whole new level. And for good reason.

I know I have talked and blabbed and pressed the importance of mushrooms on you again and again, and I apologize if i am sounding redundant. But sometimes repetition + persistence is the only way to to ingrain a long lasting change in health behavior. No one got a strong core from hearing to draw in your lower belly in yoga only once.

Reishi mushroom is the "mushroom of immortality" and has a stronger effect on the immune system than any other mushroom. Along with other mushrooms, though, Reishi has high levels of potassium + selenium + antioxidants making it a key addition to any anti-aging and anti-cancer regimen. It protects cell DNA, protects the body from harmful effects of chemotherapy such as nausea and kidney damage, and is highly anti-inflammatory leaving the athletes body in pure bliss before during and after strenuous physical activity.

Acting as an adaptogen, reishi has the ability to produce non-specific immune stabilizing responses in the body leaving the entire body a little more equal than before. As opposed to directly targeting a specific organ, tissue, or joint within the body it takes a little bit of everything it needs from each cell within the body to either bring the body "up" or "down" aiming to reach homeostasis.

heres where it gets really really rad . . . . . . . . . . .

The people of the past, in my opinion, were far smarter than we are now. They had a connection to mother nature and the universe so strong that they might as well have been on an euphoric mushroom trip every day of their lives. The colors, smells, flavors, and textures they came into contact with were more than just a sensory experience. It was completely immersion into tranquility and trust with all living things. They innately knew that what came from the soil, for the most part, was supposed to heal and repair every part of our bodies. Take our liver for example, constantly getting pounded by environmental and personally chosen toxicities such as coffee (im guilty), alcohol (guilty), processed food, stress, refined sugars, over the counter meds, GMO food, manipulated grains, lack of vegetables in diet, negative self-talk, and so on. Our liver is the MAIN mode of detoxification and a toxic liver will eventually take your ass to crazy town and leave your soul sick and tired. Stress, acidity in the diet, and lack of movement will get you there the quickest way possible. In a 2013 study conducted by Food and Toxicology, reishi was found to completely reverse liver damage and promote liver cell regeneration through the release of free-radical slaughtering antioxidants that would have eventually led to disease. What happens when we suffer from poor liver health? We are unable to process fats, carbohydrates, and protein effectively leaving our metabolism way lower than wed wish and our midsection on the pudgy side. We lose the ability to properly eliminate toxic wastes, produce bile, and release unnecessary nutrients that our body can do without. In my opinion, the most effective way to stay trim, keep your immunity skyrocketing, and using the antioxidants in your food most effectively is to take care of your liver.

That being said, my favorite ways to take reishi are in my morning coffee, in a post-workout mushroom beverage, in homemade vegan-mayo (recipe below), in salad dressings, or in my herbal beauty butters and milks (email me for details.) Not to say that I get uber creative with my mushroom ingestion modalities, as the kitchen should be a place of experimentation so that we never plateau in our wellness efforts.
